On March 5, 2024, the suspect 18-year-old Marquis Chapple was a passenger in a vehicle parked in front of a south Sacramento convenience store when a Sheriffโ€™s patrol vehicle with three deputies pulled up behind them with its lights on. The driver pulled out a handgun which he tossed to Chapple and told him to run. Chapple opened the door and ran with the gun but not pointing it, for about seven steps, when a Deputy shot three bullets at Chappleโ€™s back, two rounds hit him, one in the leg, and the other in his back. Chapple was transported to a local hospital where he recovered from his gunshots wounds before being booked in the Sacramento County Jail.
Marquis Chapple recently filed a lawsuit against the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department in a Federal Court.
