About this video

The sinkhole that opened along Jalan Masjid India, Kuala Lumpur, in August last year was caused by a failed sewer pipe structure weakened by chemical corrosion and soil instability — not by underground limestone, as initially suspected.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa told the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Oct 23) that a Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) task force identified the corroded sewer system as the main cause.

Dr Zaliha also said that ongoing geotechnical studies across Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle have found no high-risk zones so far.
