Ninja Nerds!
In this neurology lecture, Professor Zach Murphy provides a high-yield breakdown of Seizures, focusing on the classification, pathophysiology, clinical features, and diagnostic approach to one of the most common neurologic emergencies. This lecture lays the foundation for understanding seizure types, their underlying causes, and how to distinguish them in clinical practice.
We begin by exploring the pathophysiology of seizures—abnormal, excessive, and synchronous neuronal activity within the brain—and discuss the various etiologies, including genetic conditions, structural abnormalities, metabolic disturbances, infections, and toxins. From there, we move into the classification of seizures as focal (partial) or generalized, with further distinctions based on awareness and motor involvement.
You’ll learn to recognize the features of focal aware and focal impaired awareness seizures, as well as generalized tonic-clonic, absence, myoclonic, tonic, clonic, and atonic seizures. The lecture emphasizes how to localize seizure origin based on clinical findings and the importance of EEG in diagnosis. We also cover the concept of epilepsy, when seizures become recurrent and unprovoked, and introduce red flag signs that may suggest status epilepticus or structural pathology.
