The UGC Regulations 2026 sparked a nationwide protest and sharply divided opinions. The law, which aimed to end discrimination on college campuses, was seen by many as a weapon against general category students.
While necessary to deal with the reality of caste discrimination on campuses - many pointed to the loosely worded regulation that had no clear provision punishment for false charges.
With BJP's core voter base feeling abandoned - the protests against the guidelines intensified with the burning of effigies of PM Modi and provocative/abusive slogans against him, something rarely seen in the last 11 years.
With the SC now staying the regulations - will this cap the issue - or create more resentment???
