(4 Oct 1995) T/I: 10:55:37
Over 1,500 communists gathered behind the White House in Moscow on
Wednesday (4/10) to commemorate the second anniversary of the
parliamentary revolt against President Boris Yeltsin. It was the
largest rally in three days to mark the showdown. Alexander
Rutskoi, a ringleader in the revolt, Gennady Zyuganov, the head of
the revived Communist Party and Chairman of the Union of Russian
People Nikolai Kuznetsov addressed the crowd. The demonstrators
carried portraits of those who were killed in the shootout and
observed a moment of silence to honour the dead. An Orthodox
memorial service was held on the street and the crowd pressed
closely around symbolic graves. In St. Petersburg, about 2,000
people chose the anniversary to hold a protest against the current
government. Protestors waved communist flags and carried
anti-government posters as speakers called for the return of the
communist system.
