The breakthrough came early, Mason Mount striking in the eighth minute after controlling a clever cross-field delivery from Bryan Mbeumo. His neat touch and precise finish into the bottom-right corner set the tone for United’s afternoon.

Sunderland goalkeeper Roefs did his best to keep his side in contention, producing a string of saves—including a stunning fingertip stop to divert Bruno Fernandes’ curling effort onto the post midway through the first half. Yet his resistance was broken again just after the half-hour mark. A long throw from Diogo Dalot sparked chaos, Matthijs de Ligt flicked it on, and Benjamin Šeško was in the right place to tuck home United’s second.
