ROUNDING OFF NUMBERS TO THE NEAREST TEN THOUSANDS

RULE IN ROUNDING NUMBERS
We round a number up if the digit we are rounding is followed by 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9.
We round a number down if the digit we are rounding is followed by 4, 3, 2, 1, or 0.

Example 1:
Round 37 596 to the nearest ten thousands
Step 1: Label each digit with the correct place value.
Step 2: Identify the digit to be rounded.
Step 3: Identify the digit found at the right side of the digit to be rounded off.

If the digit to be rounded is followed by 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, round up.
If the digit to be rounded is followed by 4, 3, 2, 1, or 0, round down.

Since the digit found at the right side of 3 is 7, so we will round up.
When we round a number up, we add 1 to the digit that we are rounding.

Step 4:
Change all the digits to the right of the number we are rounding into zero (0).
Step 5:
Copy the digit/digits at the left side of the digit we are rounding.

If 37 596 is rounded to the nearest ten thousands the answer is 40 000.
