The song was writted by Rod Stewart, Carmine Appice, Duane Hitchings, and Kevin Savigar. "Young Turks" marked a sharp turn into synth-pop and new wave territory for Rod Stewart in the early '80s. Rod’s raspy vocals are still very present, but framed by an early MTV-friendly sound.
"Young Turks" tells a runaway love story about two young people, Billy and Patti, who escape their restrictive surroundings to chase a new life together: "Young hearts, be free tonight / Time is on your side / Don't let them put you down / Don't let 'em push you around."
Despite the title, the phrase “Young Turks” never actually appears in the lyrics. “Young Turks” is an old expression referring to rebellious youth, not the ethnic group. This is one of Rod Stewart's most successful 1980s singles.
