About this video
Major Shaitan Singh Bhati was born on December 1, 1924, in Banasar village, Jodhpur district, Rajasthan, India into a military family; his father was Lieutenant Colonel Hem Singh. He joined the Jodhpur State Forces in 1949, later transferring to the Kumaon Regiment after Jodhpur merged with India, rising to the rank of Major by June 1962. He is most renowned for his leadership and extraordinary bravery during the Sino-Indian War of 1962, specifically in the Battle of Rezang La on November 18, 1962. Rezang La, located at about 16,000 to 17,000 feet in the Chushul sector, was a strategically isolated position defended by five platoons of Major Singhโs company of the 13 Kumaon Regiment.
Despite being heavily outnumbered and facing intense artillery, mortar, and small arms fire from Chinese forces, Major Shaitan Singh moved between platoon posts under heavy fire to inspire and reorganize his troops.
During the fierce battle, he was seriously wounded in the abdomen and arms but continued to lead and motivate his men. When he became incapacitated, he ordered his soldiers to leave him behind to save their lives and entrusted his pistol to a soldier to prevent it from falling into enemy hands.
His company fought to the last man and last round, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy โ for every Indian soldier lost, the Chinese suffered four to five casualties.
Major Shaitan Singh was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, Indiaโs highest military decoration, for his supreme courage, leadership, and devotion to duty during the battle. His heroic stand at Rezang La thwarted the Chinese advance towards the Chushul airfield and remains a symbol of valor and sacrifice in Indian military history.
