U.S. Nuclear Disarmament Goals 🇺🇸

President Obama committed America to seeking “the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons” in a landmark speech in Prague in April 2009. Since then, the global nuclear landscape has shifted dramatically, presenting the next American president with a quite different and dangerous set of global nuclear challenges. A big question is whether the next president should discard the Prague vision of global zero nuclear weapons. Dr. Dunn, in an essay for the Center for Global Security Research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, argues that despite the sobering global nuclear landscape, the next U.S. president should not simply “walk away” from articulating and pursuing a U.S. agenda for nuclear disarmament diplomacy. Instead, the United States should redefine the agenda in light of today’s nuclear challenges and dangers as well as the obstacles to global zero, basing the approach on a strategy of “looking long and throwing short”. Dr. Lewis A. Dunn is an independent contractor for the Center for Global Security Research and also serves as a Principal with Science Applications International Corporation. Dr. Dunn served as Assistant Director of the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency and as Ambassador to the 1985 Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty Review Conference. He continues to be called on to provide advice on issues related to the NPT and its review conferences.
