About this video

In this video tutorial, I demonstrate how to draw a realistic graphite pencil drawing of a little dog (Benji, a Tibetan Spaniel and Fox Terrier crossbreed), providing helpful tips and techniques along the way. I used graphite powder made from an old pencil lead and used it to provide contrast for the white fur of the dog. You'll learn how to draw the background, backrest of a sofa, window, eyes, nose, and fur using different pencils, blending stumps, and an eraser pencil.

Follow along with me as I demonstrate each step of the process, from adding graphite powder on the background to drawing in the fine details of the fur.

In this tutorial, I will demonstrate:

How to use graphite powder, made from an old pencil lead.
How to use blending stumps to smoothen out graphite.
How to draw different shades and values using different pencils.
How to use an eraser pencil to portray the white fur of the dog.
How to draw realistic eyes, nose, and fur.

I used B4 size paper (Kent paper), graphite powder, an HB pencil, a Faber Castell 8B pencil, a Staedtler Mars Lumograph 8B for the darker shading, an eraser pencil, and a blending stump.

About Benji
Benji was born in New South Wales, Australia, in a cage with other dogs on a Puppy Farm, poor thing. He has a damaged ear from being attacked, and a broken tail that mended crookedly. He did not receive any vet treatment while in that environment. Thankfully he and his siblings were rescued, and my sister was able to adopt Benji at 16 weeks. He's now 7 months old. A very confident, cheeky, full of beans happy dog that loves his daily walk. He loves everyone. When my sister first got him, he was scared of men, scared of boots and only ate chicken. He still shows caution whenever he sees a man he doesn't know. He gets the ‘zoomies’, i.e., he dashes around the yard. He loves playing in the sandpit and digging.
