RAW vs LOG: Key Differences Explained πŸ“Ή

About this video

RAW vs LOG. Knowing the difference usually isn't something that you just know - you need to ask someone or go look it up yourself. For a while I didn't put much thought into it, but now I know and am sharing it with you!

Some cameras shoot RAW, most cameras shoot LOG. A RAW video format is the camera's sensor data before any image processing has happened meaning RAW is technically not a viewable video. It has to be converted so that it can be seen. Shooting in RAW has advantages that nothing else has. You can control your white balance and ISO in post. This is usually not possible as white balance and ISO is baked into your footage, but with RAW, that is not the case. If you come across a camera that shoots RAW, it's probably very expensive though. RAW video format is not something that is widely accessible on all cameras yet. If you want some experience with RAW, your best bet is to find a Black Magic camera which aren't actually that expensive, but do have a learning curve if you're used to shooting with DSLRs.

LOG on the other hand is more like a picture profile where the sensor of the camera pulls in the most amount of information so that it's easier to color grade. Each camera manufacturer has its own LOG, which is why you may have seen S-LOG, V-LOG, C-LOG and more, but essentially they are all the same - just have slightly different ways of interpreting color.

If you want to level up your filmmaking game, shooting in LOG is the next step, so if you feel like you've hit a barrier with filmmaking, try shooting in LOG and it will unlock a whole new world for you.
