Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday said that due to focused reforms in the automobile freight sector, Indian Railways has now succeeded in capturing close to 30% of the countryโs total automobile transportation, and this share is increasing every month.โIn the recent past, we have focused on two major sectors. One is automobile transportation. Because of that very clear focus and multiple reforms in the automobile sector, we have been able to increase the share of automobiles carried by railways to a very significant number โ close to 30% now โ and it is increasing every month,โ the Minister said.He further announced the successful rollout of the new Door-to-Door Delivery Service for parcel and less-than-rake-load cargo.
โUnder this service, we pick up the cargo from the customerโs premises, pack it into containers, transport it by rail, and deliver it right up to the final destination. The results have been very encouraging. We are currently working to fully saturate the MumbaiโKolkata sector and are progressing very fast. Such initiatives will significantly bring down the overall logistics cost of the country,โ Vaishnaw added. When asked about progress on the special budgetary allocations made in the previous budget for steel and coal freight corridors, and the timeline for cement corridors, the Minister confirmed that dedicated freight corridors for coal and steel are nearing completion, while planning and execution for cement corridors is also underway as announced. These measures are part of the governmentโs broader push to shift more freight from road to rail, reduce logistics costs from the current ~14% of GDP to single digits, and make Indian industry more competitive.
