Prey is a ransomware-type malware identified by our research team during a routine scan of new submissions on VirusTotal. It belongs to the MedusaLocker ransomware family, known for encrypting victims' files and demanding payment for decryption.
In our test environment, Prey appended the ".prey35" extension to encrypted files—transforming "1.jpg" into "1.jpg.prey35" and "2.png" into "2.png.prey35". Following encryption, it altered the desktop wallpaper and dropped a ransom note named "HOW_TO_RECOVER_DATA.html".

MedusaLocker is a ransomware strain first identified in September 2019. It encrypts files on infected Windows systems and demands a ransom in cryptocurrency for decryption. It has evolved over time, with newer variants like MedusaLocker v3 (also known as BabyLockerKZ) emerging as recently as 2025.
