Preeclampsia and eclampsia nursing review for students about the pathophysiology, symptoms, and management!
Preeclampsia is a type of hypertensive disorder that occurs during pregnancy after about 20 weeks gestation. It can also occur after delivery, during the postpartum period. Preeclampsia, if severe enough, can turn into eclampsia. Eclampsia is where the patient experiences seizures that can progress to coma or death.
Hallmark signs and symptoms of preeclampsia include: hypertension, proteinuria, edema, and signs and symptoms of organ injury. Furthermore, patients can experience headache, vision changes, HELLP syndrome, DIC etc.
Treatment for preeclampsia include: magnesium sulfate, delivery of the baby, monitoring labs etc.
