Tensions between the EU and Russia have spiked after Polish forces shot down multiple Russian drones that violated Polish airspace during strikes on Ukraine. Poland’s Operational Command said radars tracked over 10 aerial objects on September 10 with NATO aircraft, including Dutch F-35s and Italian AWACs assisting in the response. This marks the first known instance of NATO aircraft engaging potential threats inside allied airspace. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas condemned the violation as “intentional” and urged the creation of a defensive “Eastern Border Shield” against Russia. In Warsaw, President Karol Nawrocki and Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened an emergency meeting, with discussions on activating NATO’s Article 4, which allows members to raise security concerns for consultation. While EU leaders push to “raise costs on Moscow,” NATO sources suggest the drone incident may not yet be classified as a direct Russian attack on Poland.
