Poland Faces Highest Tensions Since WW2 🇵🇱

Closer to conflict than at any time since the second world war. That's how Poland's prime minister Donald Tusk assessed Russia's incursion into Polish airspace.

It is a significant escalation by Moscow, though Russia insisted it had no intention to target Poland, a Nato ally. Poland invoked Nato's Article 4, which obliges members of the fragile alliance to "consult", rather than mobilise retaliatory military action.

Nato jets shot down Russian drones over Poland - marking the most significant escalation of tension between Moscow and the western military alliance.

Dutch, Italian and Polish aircraft shot down four out of the 19 Russian drones as citizens were told to stay at home and Poland closed all its airports.

Sir Keir Starmer condemned Russia's actions as "extremely reckless".
