About this video
This video explores how we can use the gorgeous Gymnopédies No. 1 as a means of practising jumps on the piano.
Satie's Gymnopédies and also his Gnossiennes have a nice simple structure with a hauntingly beautiful melody over a basic left hand accompaniment. This accompaniment is basically a bass not jumping to a chord which makes them perfectly adapted for practising jumps.
As part of the tutorial, as well as giving advice on how we might practice jumps, I also look at some of the other challenges posed by these pieces (such as the left hand chords with a 9th stretch).
I'm sure you'll have great fun learning this piece.
I discuss how I would not recommend hands separate practice for this based on Heinrich Neuhaus' view in his book The Art of Piano Playing where he says we should view it as an 'emergency exit' only.
