About this video

One of the most difficult and wild effects in The Lord of the Rings was the skull avalanche in The Return of the King. The crew had to create both close-up shots with full-sized rolling skulls and massive wide shots with practical effects. What started as 200 skulls quickly escalated into 60,000 — carefully engineered into a wall that had to collapse perfectly for the shot. The slightest vibration could ruin the setup, forcing the team to start all over again. After each take, they had to haul all the skulls back up for another round, which eventually turned into a strange game of throwing skulls around between crew members. A mix of chaos, engineering genius, and fun — this became one of the most memorable effects on set.
