About this video
This edition of Open Files takes a critical look at the antecedents and presidency of Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de Leon, who governed Mexico for the Institutional Revolutionary Party from 1994 to 2000. Despite its democratic veneer, Zedillo's administration was marked by repression, a strong commitment to neoliberal policies such as the Bank Rescue Program and massive privatizations, manipulation, control and favoritism in the media, and active opposition to the demands and rebellion of the indigenous communities of Chiapas led by the Zapatista National Liberation Army. Zedillo now lives in the United States and is a multimillionaire businessman, member of the boards of many of the companies that he privatized, and a professor at the university he graduated from. teleSUR
