Thursday 8th September 2022, 6:30pm, the news that everyone knew would come, and yet no one was really prepared for. The death of the only monarch most Britons ever knew brought to an end a reign which had lasted 70 years and 214 days - the longest in British history. Steadfast in her service to country and Commonwealth; a constant in British post-war public life – the outpouring of grief which greeted her death was powerful and personal. Four out of five of the UK’s population weren’t even alive when she ascended the throne.
