First Day in Tripoli, Libya 🇱🇾

My first day in Libya began in the heart of Tripoli, a city that feels both hyper-controlled and endlessly misunderstood, and I arrived determined to document every detail I could. With cameras strictly limited and most public filming off-limits, I ended up recording almost exclusively the voice of my government-assigned guide — his explanations, his corrections, his carefully curated version of the “real Libya.” As we walked through Tripoli’s streets, from Martyrs’ Square to the quiet residential blocks patrolled by plainclothes security, every comment he made became a proxy for the images I wasn’t allowed to capture. It was a crash course in how Libya wants to be seen, and how much of Tripoli’s daily life is concealed behind checkpoints, permissions, and unofficial red lines. What I found was a city suspended between hospitality and surveillance, where every story you hear is shaped by what you’re not allowed to show.
