Off the Shelf: An AI Short Film 🎬

I wanted to take a break from horror, sci-fi, and big action pieces to explore something a bit more quirky and intimate, and focus on exposition and characterization.
Generative AI is an incredible tool to quickly establish aesthetics, tone, palette, and texture. But I was curious—how far could I push these tools with actual characterization and dialogue?
For this short—set in Brooklyn, 1989, inside a magical bookstore in Little Tokyo—I chose an intimate location as my creative sandbox. I wanted to rely entirely on dialogue, character body language and facial expressions, as well as interaction, to see if I could convey a believable, grounded scene—one in which the characters not only feel real but are also aware of each other and the space they inhabit.
I’m barely scratching the surface, but... I think the characters have some degree of personality.
