About this video
You may find it harder to get started withâŻbreastfeedingâŻafter a c-section but here are some tips to make it easier:
đ Colostrum harvesting â you may not be able to get immediate skin to skin contact with your baby, so breastfeeding may be delayed but pre expressed colostrum allows for your baby to have your milk post birth.
đ Find a comfy position â experiment with different positions to find what works best for you and your baby, such as lying on your side, the underarm (rugby) hold, the laid-back position or the football hold.
đ Pillows for support â use pillows or a nursing pillow to help you support your baby without straining your incision site, youâve gotta keep your stomach area protected!
đ Take it slow â it might take a little longer to get the hang of breastfeeding with your healing body. Donât rush; your body is still working hard to recover, and your babyâs there to help you through it.
đ Watch your latch â a good latch is key to avoiding soreness! If it feels off, try adjusting. Itâs okay to ask for help from a lactation consultant, your comfort matters too.
đ Stay hydrated and nourished â youâre doing a lot, so make sure to drink plenty of water and eat healthy meals to fuel both your recovery and your milk supply.
đ Support â if possible, ask someone to pass your baby to you iso you don't have to twist or bend.
Don't put pressure on yourself, your body is healing from major surgery, you need to make sure you're recovering too! đ đŒ
