About this video
On Sunday morning, November 24, 1963, doctor Tom Shires was called to the emergency room of the Parkland Memorial Hospital, to assume command of the same doctors and nurses who had attempted to save President John F. Kennedy's life two days earlier. They were working on a patient with a serious gunshot wound to the abdomen.
The patient was Lee Harvey Oswald. But the blood loss was massive and fluids couldn't be replaced quickly enough, in part because Oswald was transported to the hospital in an ambulance with no paramedics and
no fluids. Despite everything the surgeon had learned about trauma resuscitation over the years, the operation was unsuccessful. He left the operating room covered in blood, donned a clean lab coat, and held the news conference announcing to the world that Oswald was dead.
