About this video
Moles in the garden — how much harm do they really do?
They dig extensive tunnels and feed on earthworms, which isn’t ideal for soil life. But unlike voles, they don’t eat plant roots or crops directly, so in some cases they’re relatively harmless — it depends what you're growing.
In this video, I show you a fresh mole run beneath our no dig polytunnel, explain how they move around, and why it's usually best not to squash the runs. Compressing them tends to provoke more digging.
We also use humane metal cylinder traps placed inside active runs — no bait needed. Adam has had success catching them this way, and even managed to grab one by hand in the greenhouse during watering!
It’s part of observing the natural life in the garden, and learning how to respond with care and minimal disturbance.
