About this video

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah didn't drink water after being substituted against Manchester City as he was fasting.

Salah, who opened the scoring in Liverpool's 4-1 defeat, was substituted in the 70th minute.

The 30-year-old was offered a drink of water by a member of the Liverpool coaching staff but instead placed the bottle on the floor as he was observing Ramadan.

During Ramadan, the holiest month of the Islamic calendar, many Muslims do not eat or drink during daylight hours from March 22 until April 21. They break this fast when the sun has set.

The report states that referees have been encouraged to wait for a natural stoppage in play before pausing the game, such as a goal kick or a throw-in.

Salah often celebrates goals by performing the sujud, which is the act of low bowing to Allah facing the direction of the Kaaba at Mecca.

Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool against City, but Pep Guardiola's side then took control, with Julian Alvarez, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish all scoring.

Liverpool have three more matches during Ramadan as they take on Chelsea, Arsenal and Leeds.
