Mike the Headless Chicken was a real chicken who lived for 18 months after being beheaded in 1945. On September 10, 1945, a farmer named Lloyd Olsen in Fruita, Colorado, attempted to behead the chicken for dinner. However, the axe missed the jugular vein and a portion of the brainstem and one ear remained intact, allowing basic motor functions to continue.

Mike didn't just survive—he thrived. He could balance, walk clumsily, and even attempt to preen and crow, though he had no head.
Today, Mike is remembered with a statue in Fruita and an annual "Mike the Headless Chicken Festival" celebrating his legacy of strange survival.
