International Contenders Added to Melbourne Cup Nominees
MELBOURNE – (September 3, 2025) – The path to the 2025 Melbourne Cup has become clearer with the announcement of the 120 nominated horses. The list includes a strong group of local contenders and 19 international runners, bringing a global element to the prestigious $10 million race at Flemington on November 4.

A noteworthy nomination is Parchment Party, a horse from the United States. If the horse competes, it would mark the first time a U.S.-trained runner has competed in the Melbourne Cup. Adding to this unique entry, American Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez is booked to ride, potentially becoming the first American-based jockey to race in the event.

The nominations also highlight the dominance of Australia's top trainers. Champion trainer Chris Waller has a record 27 entries, with Ciaron Maher contributing 13. Their combined entries account for a third of the total nominations. Among the top-tier horses, defending champion Knight's Choice aims to achieve a historic back-to-back victory, a feat not accomplished since the legendary Makybe Diva's run.
