Manila Resists China Near Second Thomas Shoal 🇵🇭

The Philippines says tensions in the West Philippine Sea are showing signs of easing after a series of confrontations with Chinese maritime forces. Armed Forces Chief Romeo Brawner Jr. announced Manila had successfully driven Chinese vessels away from its Exclusive Economic Zone, particularly around the disputed Second Thomas Shoal. The shoal, called Ayungin in Manila, has long been a flashpoint despite a 2016 tribunal ruling rejecting Beijing’s sweeping claims in the South China Sea. To reinforce its position, the Philippines maintains a small marine detachment aboard the grounded warship BRP Sierra Madre. While China’s coast guard often blocks resupply missions to the Sierra Madre, officials expect safe passage this time. Backed by joint naval drills with Australia and Canada, Manila accuses Beijing of gross violations of international law, warning tensions remain fragile despite tentative improvements.
