Authorities are scrambling to respond to a major oil spill that started forming off the coast of the US state of California on October 2, 2021. At least 572,800 litres (126,000 gallons) of crude oil has contaminated the waters near Los Angeles, threatening local wildlife and fouling beaches and wetlands. Huntington Beach and Newport Beach, popular destinations for surfing, were forced to close on October 3, and could remain off limits to visitors for months. Investigators suspect an undersea oil pipeline may be the source of the leak.
