Lyor Cohen's journey into music management began with joining the New York-based company Rush during the early days of the record label Def Jam. Rush managed Kurtis Blow, Run-D.M.C., and Whodini, among others. He later became road manager for Beastie Boys, and one of his notable achievements was changing the venue for one of their tours from a 300-seat space to a 14,000-seat arena. He further progressed to become the owner of Def Jam, which he, along with other stakeholders, sold to Polygram, a subsidiary of Universal. He revealed that originally, he didn’t want to sell the company, but he admits that the luck was on their side because they sold just four months after signing DMX, Ja Rule, and Jay-Z.
