Luis Alfredo Garavito — known as La Bestia — is believed to be the most prolific serial killer in recorded history, responsible for the murders of hundreds of boys across Colombia.

Throughout the 1990s, boys began vanishing from poor neighbourhoods, rural villages, and bus terminals across Colombia. At first, the disappearances were treated as isolated incidents — runaways, accidents, or simply ignored altogether.

Then bodies began to surface.

Despite clear similarities in how the victims were killed, it wasn’t until a series of mass graves were uncovered in 1998 that investigators began to realise something far more disturbing was happening. Even then, authorities struggled to comprehend the truth — that a single man could be responsible for so many deaths.

That man was Luis Garavito.

Known to locals as La Bestia, Garavito travelled constantly, disguising himself, gaining trust, offering help, and leading his victims away — never to be seen again.

When he was finally arrested in 1999, the true scale of his crimes began to emerge. With more than 100 victims formally linked to him at the time of his conviction, Garavito went on to confess to hundreds more, forcing investigators to confront one of the largest and most disturbing criminal cases in modern history.
