Von der Leyen & Costa Speak on EU Geopolitics 🌍

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa addressed the European Parliament on the growing geopolitical tensions facing the continent and the need for the European Union to become stronger and more sovereign.

Speaking to lawmakers in Strasbourg, von der Leyen warned that global instability, conflicts on Europe’s borders, and rising strategic competition require the EU to reinforce its security, economic resilience, and political unity. She stressed the importance of reducing strategic dependencies and strengthening Europe’s capacity to act independently in defence, energy, and critical technologies.

Antonio Costa echoed those concerns, calling for deeper cooperation among member states and a renewed commitment to European sovereignty. He said the EU must be able to protect its citizens, defend its interests, and act decisively on the global stage amid an increasingly fragmented international order.

The debate comes as the EU faces pressure from the war in Ukraine, tensions in the Middle East, competition with China and the United States, and internal challenges over defence spending and industrial policy. Lawmakers are expected to continue discussions on strengthening Europe’s defence capabilities, economic security, and institutional cohesion.
