Movie Plot:
Koyla tells the story of Shankar, a mute and loyal servant raised by the tyrannical Raja Choudhury, who rules over a coal-rich region . Raja desires to marry the innocent village girl Gauri, and tricks her by sending Shankar’s photo as his own. Gauri agrees, thinking she’s marrying the man in the photo, but is horrified to discover Raja is her groom.

When Gauri resists, Raja imprisons and tortures her. Shankar, though mute, becomes her protector. After witnessing Raja’s atrocities—including the of Gauri’s brother Ashok—Shankar and Gauri escape. Raja’s men hunt them down, and Shankar is attacked and left for dead.

Miraculously, Shankar is rescued by a healer who discovers he wasn’t born mute—his throat was damaged in childhood when his parents were murdered over a diamond discovery. The healer restores Shankar’s voice, and he returns to confront Raja. In a fiery climax, Shankar exposes Raja’s crimes to the coal miners and kills him, reclaiming justice and reuniting with Gauri.

With music by Rajesh Roshan, including hits like “Dekha Tujhe Toh” and “Ghoongte Mein Chanda”, the film blends high-octane action with emotional depth. It was praised for Shah Rukh Khan’s intense performance and Amrish Puri’s villainy, earning the latter a Filmfare nomination.
