Student Shurik comes to one of the small mountainous republics to study the customs, rituals and folklore of the highlanders. He meets a girl, Nina, who is being asked to marry the chairman of the local district committee. Anticipating her disagreement, Nina's uncle - Dzhabrail - with the help of well-known rogues Coward, Fool and Pro, arranges the kidnapping of the girl.
