FIFA Launches ASEAN Cup to Boost Regional Football 🌏

MetroTV, FIFA President Gianni Infantino unveiled a new football tournament for Southeast Asian countries, on the sidelines of the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

Footage shows Infantino and ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn signing a memorandum of understanding as Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim watched on.

Ibrahim thanked FIFA for the opportunity to promote development of sports in the region. “I am exceptionally thankful to FIFA for giving us encouragement and support. You have the expertise, you have the experience, and to share this to the young, particularly those poorer segments of our population, the urban youth, those in the rural and the heartland, to be able to obtain the same encouragement, advantage, and support,” he noted.

Infantino said he hoped that the tournament would unite ASEAN countries and help boost the sport in the region.
