Kerala Flood Alert: Heavy Rains in Idukki Cause Flooding and Dam Releases

Heavy rains lash Kerala’s Idukki district, causing widespread flooding, landslides, and property damage. Vehicles, including cars and scooters, were swept away as floodwaters inundated homes and streets. Authorities opened four shutters at Kallarkutty Dam, releasing 160 cubic metres per second, while Mullaperiyar Dam’s water level rose to 137.8 metres, with all 13 shutters planned to open, releasing up to 5,000 cubic metres per second. Rescue operations are underway — five people trapped in Kumily have been saved, and 42 families evacuated to safer ground.
