About this video
The Lady and the Unicorn is the 1970 solo album by British folk musician John Renbourn. This record contains a variety of instrumental pieces including medieval music, folk tunes and early classical music originally written for lute or mandolin. These early pieces are arranged and consummately played on guitar by Renbourn and backed with early instruments by folk luminaries of the time.
The lineup were:
John Renbourn: guitars and sitar
Terry Cox: hand-drums and glockenspiel
Don Harper: viola
Lea Nicholson: concertina
Tony Roberts: flute
Ray Warleigh: flute
Dave Swarbrick: violin
This piece is the title track of the album, written by Renbourn and inspired by La Dame ร la licorne, a series of six massive wall-length tapestries woven from wool and silk in Flanders around the year 1500. They feature a medieval lady in a garden, sometimes accompanied by her handmaid, but always with a unicorn and are thought to represent the six senses.
