#JFFHorizons - Change seems possible now - John Battelle, Recount Media CEO and Co-Founder

WorkingNation is talking with thought leaders attending the JFF Horizons conference – a virtual gathering of private, public, and nonprofit leaders and innovators working toward an equitable economic recovery.

“One thing that gives me hope is the rapidity with which change seems to be possible right now.” This is according to John Battelle, CEO and co-founder of Recount Media. Battelle says, “If you're a media company whose job it is to reflect and to report on the most important national stories, it behooves you to have a staff that reflects the diversity of the country.” He adds that every company should be thinking about the current issues at the forefront and “rethink a lot of the assumptions that may have been powering their actions as business people and leaders.”

In response to the pandemic, Recount Media has been able to pivot quickly. Battelle says his newsroom had no real downtime as the employees switched to working from home—managing to meet their mission without interruption. “Our job as journalists is to identify the truth, report the truth, try to help people see what is true and factual. There are not two sides to truth, though there may be two sides to interpretation of fact.”

Battelle is an entrepreneur, author, professor, and journalist whose career has centered around creating media properties.
