About this video
According to The Race, Jack Doohan came close to making a return to the Formula 1 paddock with Alpine for the final three races of the season.
Following the summer break, he was repeatedly informed that this comeback could materialize if Colapinto failed to deliver. The Australian genuinely believed he had a realistic shot at reclaiming the seat.
However, Franco Colapinto has shown marked improvement in recent grands prix, regularly outpacing his more seasoned teammate Pierre Gasly—something Doohan struggled to achieve despite logging over 7,000 kilometers of testing in Alpine’s F1 machinery prior to his debut.
Even though Doohan’s camp managed to secure the necessary financial backing for the drive, Colapinto’s primary backer Mercado Libre committed their support through the season’s end, further cementing the Argentine’s position in the car.
At this point, Doohan finds himself completely on the outside looking in. He’s been relegated to minimal simulator duties and limited track time, forced into a spectator role as reserve driver. He’s currently evaluating potential opportunities with Cadillac, Williams, Haas, and Sauber for the 2026 season.
