Israeli Police Clash with Ultra-Orthodox Protesters 🚔

Israeli police in Jerusalem fired water cannons and hit ultra-orthodox Jews with batons on Wednesday, as they protested against the detention of young religious men who ignored calls for military service.

"The government of Israel is waging a war against the Orthodox Jews who study the Torah" said Jaim Riej, a 19 year-old ultra-Orthodox Jew.

Since the creation of Israel in 1948, ultra-Orthodox Jews have been exempt from military service. However, in July 2024, the Israeli military sent out the first 1,000 conscription notices to ultra-Orthodox Jewish men, following a unanimous Supreme Court ruling that the government must stop exempting them, amid its escalating genocide in Gaza.
