About this video
The International Criminal Court on March 17 issued an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin. He has been accused of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine during the ongoing crisis. Along with Putin, warrant has also been issued against Maria Lvova-Belova, Russian Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights.
Moscow has repeatedly denied accusations that its forces have committed atrocities during its conflict with Ukraine. Russia has termed the International Criminal Court’s decision as “null and void”.
Hofmanski said that this is an important moment in the process of justice before the ICC. Ukraine hailed ICC’s decision as Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted, “Wheels of Justice are turning”.
Notably, Putin is only the third world leader to be charged in ICC’s history, joining the likes of Muammar Gaddafi, Omar al-Bashir. The warrant empowers Courts of all 123 member states of ICC to arrest Putin if he sets foot in their territory.
