Inside Nature’s Giants: The Giant Squid 🦑

The BAFTA award-winning series that gets under the skin of the largest animals on the planet presents a special episode examining one of the biggest yet most mysterious animals on Earth – the Giant Squid.

In a special dissection laboratory in Wellington, New Zealand, the team uses a swimming pool to thaw the deep-sea giant before delving into its three hearts, razor sharp beak, tooth covered tentacles, and bizarre reproductive system.

To understand the anatomy of deep-sea alien that's never been observed in the wild, Joy scuba dives with the Giant Pacific Octopus and goes in search of live squid at night, while Simon tests the squid’s tentacle attack and comes face-to-face with the cuttlefish – whose electric shape-shifting skin gives them awe-inspiring camouflage.

Richard Dawkins guides us through the extraordinary evolution of the squid, octopus and cuttlefish and animations bring bizarre hunting and mating behaviours to life. The documentary features footage of the squid's enemy, the Sperm Whale, feasting on giant squid and captivating film of deep-sea squid releasing their babies, thousands of metres below the surface.
