About this video

In this video, ICAN Programme Director Susi Snyder responds to the recent US attack on Iran and the growing use of nuclear weapons as political justification in global crises.

Meanwhile in Europe, President Emmanuel Macron is expected to outline a vision for greater European strategic independence — including an expanded role for French (and potentially British) nuclear forces in European defence.

From ICAN’s perspective, this is a dangerous direction.

Nuclear weapons do not create stability. They deepen mistrust, accelerate arms races and increase the risk of catastrophic miscalculation. Whether in the context of Iran, Ukraine, or European “deterrence” debates, the logic is the same: more nuclear weapons do not make the world safer.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) offers a path forward under international law. The world does not need new nuclear umbrellas or expanded deterrence doctrines. It needs disarmament.
