I’m Rusty! Back on the Canals After Months on the River… and It Shows!

After five months trapped on the river, I’m finally back on the narrow canals — and honestly, it feels amazing! This week I set off solo on my new boat, tackling my first lock of the day and chatting about how it feels to be cruising properly again after such a long watery confinement.

But canals aren’t rivers… they’re much narrower, shallower, and apparently full of trees waiting to smack you in the face.

After single-handing my first lock, Gabby joins me onboard and we work together through the next few. A huge thank you to the lovely viewer who gifted us walkie-talkies — they were absolute lifesavers!

Just when things were going smoothly, we get walloped by a low branch that sends everything flying… classic pirate chaos.

We moor up for the night in a beautiful spot on the Middlewich Branch before heading to Venetian Marina the next morning for diesel and a well-earned late lunch at Taylors Tearooms. Gabby takes the tiller (and does brilliantly)… while I, on the other hand, manage an almighty bang against a narrowing in an old bridge hole. Oops.
