About this video
Serotonin syndrome is a medical emergency resulting from an excess of serotonin in the central nervous system. It typically occurs after the use of certain medications, particularly antidepressants, or drug interactions that increase serotonin levels such as ecstasy.
Symptoms range from mild (shivering and diarrhea) to severe (muscle rigidity, fever, seizures, and confusion) and can develop rapidly. If untreated, it may lead to complications such as seizures, irregular heartbeat, or unconsciousness.
I'll never forget the first time I saw this in the field, it was my first year as licensed paramedic and the patient also was dealing with trauma from a fall, watch out this can be a sneaky presentation.
Be great,
Evan, The Paramedic Coach
