About this video

Hypokalemia Symptoms and Treatment | Nursing School Lecture

In this video we are diving into the pathophysiology, signs, and interventions for hypokalemia, or low potassium. The normal range of potassium is between 3.5 -to 5 milliequivalents per liter, and hypokalemia occurs if that value drops below 3.5.

Pathophysiology:
Medications, increased potassium excretion, decreased potassium intake, and increased aldosterone production can all cause hypokalemia.

Signs and symptoms of hypokalemia:
Cardiac arrhythmias, and a weak and thready pulse, muscle weakness, or GI upset.

Nursing Interventions and assessments for hypokalemia:
Monitor: Assess your patients cardiovascular status, make sure they have an ECG monitor on, assess their respiratory, renal, GI and neuromuscular status.

Reverse: The main ways that you'll do this is to give potassium, either through an oral potassium supplement or through an IV. You will NEVER give potassium through an IV push. Giving IV potassium is super dangerous, because too much of it can stop the heart.

Prevent: You'll need to educate your patient on consuming more high potassium foods, and watching for the signs and symptoms of hypokalemia.

Alrighty, that was a lot to take in, great job, friend! You are doing amazing!
