Hydrocarbons.<br />Characteristic: Compounds made up of hydrogen and carbon.<br />Hydrocarbons are of 2 types, saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons.<br />Name: Saturated hydrocarbons.<br />Characteristic: Hydrocarbons in which the carbon atoms are connected by single bonds only.<br />Saturated hydrocarbons are also called Alkanes.<br />Name: Unsaturated hydrocarbons.<br />Characteristic: Hydrocarbons in which the carbon atoms are connected by double bonds or triple bonds are called unsaturated hydrocarbons.<br />Unsaturated hydrocarbons are of 2 types, Alkenes and Alkynes.<br />Name: Alkenes.<br />Characteristic: Unsaturated hydrocarbons in which the carbon atoms are connected by at least one double bond.<br />Name: Alkynes.<br />Characteristic: Unsaturated hydrocarbons in which the carbon atoms are connected by at least one triple bond are called alkynes.
