South Metro Fire Rescue Responds to Residential Garage Fire Involving Electric Vehicle
At 2:52 p.m. on Monday, December 1, 2025, South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) and deputies from the Douglas County Sheriffโ€™s Office responded to a reported structure fire on Vienna Circle in unincorporated Douglas County. Multiple 911 callers reported an electric vehicle on fire inside the homeโ€™s garage.
A large plume of smoke was visible as crews arrived. Firefighters from Engine 44 reported a fully involved garage fire with two vehicles inside, one being a hybrid. One occupant was able to safely evacuate before units arrived.
Firefighters deployed an electric-vehicle containment blanket over a hybrid vehicle to prevent fire spread while crews worked to remove it from the garage. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes, contained to the garage with no extension into the home. Approximately 60 firefighters, including SMFRโ€™s Hazmat team, responded.
Due to exposure to toxic byproducts created by burning lithium-ion batteries, 30 firefighters underwent full decontamination, and their protective gear has been pulled from service for specialized cleaning.
One person was treated and transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Four residents were displaced as a result of the fire.
Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Fire Safety Tips
As electric and hybrid vehicles become more common, SMFR encourages the community to follow these safety guidelines:
๐Ÿ”Œ Charge Safely:
โ€ข Use only manufacturer-approved chargers.
โ€ข Avoid using extension cords for EV charging.
โ€ข Keep charging stations clear of combustibles.
๐Ÿš— Monitor Your Vehicle:
โ€ข If your EV or hybrid is involved in a collision, have the battery inspected even if the damage appears minor.
โ€ข Watch for warning signs such as unusual odors, smoke, popping sounds, or rapid temperature increases.
๐Ÿ”ฅ Garage Safety:
โ€ข Never cover an EV or battery-powered device while itโ€™s charging.
โ€ข Install working smoke alarms in garages.
โ€ข Keep a clear, unobstructed path to exits.
โš ๏ธ If you see smoke or fire from an EV:
โ€ข Do not attempt to extinguish it yourself. EV battery fires can reignite and release hazardous fumes.
โ€ข Evacuate immediately and call 911.
South Metro Fire Rescue reminds residents that quick reporting and early detection can save lives and limit damage.
